JE2 Task 1 - Game Story Development

Story
The story begins with a seventeen year old boy named Kai setting off on a journey to find his village's stolen relic that protects it's people from evil and impure beings specifically Cravana of the Akalisks who is a vicious gigantic lizard that's been targeting his village or a sacrifice but the relic keeps creatures like these from entering the village and wreaking havoc and destroying peoples lives.

So Kai sets out on his journey too look for the stolen relic but he must be quick to look for it because once every full moon an evil creature named Cravana a gigantic lizard called the Akalisks from the Basilisk family who can kill men just by staring them in the eyes but the difference is that Akalisk lizards only turn them to stone meaning they can be returned back to normal if you sprinkled them with the crushed up petals of a certain flower called Catalista.

Along the way Kai stumbles upon a person  which seemed to have been petrified or turned to stone he finds the relic right beside the stone cold petrified body, overcome with joy and excitement from finding the stolen relic he ran as fast as he could back to their village, but he was too late as he finds the houses were destroyed and everyone in a petrified state luckily no one had been killed or taken except for one person who was to be given as a sacrifice to revive the basilisk king.

After Kai finds the village in tatters he embarks on another journey with the relic to protect him from the Akalisks he swore that he would find the flower that could turn everyone back to normal and to bring back his best friend Maya who is to be used as sacrifice to bring back the Basilisk king. Without a sacrifice the Basilisk king will stay in slumber for another 100 years.

Setting
The setting will be in a typical small fantasy village but it will expand to a more tree filled setting as the main character embarks on his journey. There will also be the destroyed version of the village with broken houses and fences and with petrified people.

Backstory
In the village where Kai lives there is a powerful relic that protects the village from impure beings but one day it get's stolen, so Kai with the request from the village chief embarks on a short journey to search for the stolen relic but when he finally finds it lying beside the petrified body he returns to his beloved village only to find that everyone had been turned into stone and that his best friend has been taken so then Kai embarks on a longer journey to make things right again.

Characters
Protagonist:
Kai is a seventeen year old boy who lost his parents when he was still young so he trained hard so that he would be able to protect his loved ones and become just like the warrior in the old tales so that what happened to him in the past wouldn't happen again.

Antagonist:

Cravana is a lizard general for the Akalisk kind who trains and commands younger generation to get them ready to serve the Basilisk king in his time of revival. Cravana has been trained to terrorize villages seeking for the right sacrifice but when he finally finds the right person she is protected within the protection of a barrier specially to keep their kind away created by a powerful relic.

Character Backstories
Maya is Kai's best friend who is a side character and basically what the quest will revolve around in. Maya met Kai when they were only 7 years old and they've been friends ever since, they got along because just like Kai, Maya also lost her parents when she was still young.

JE2 Task 3 - Cutscene

The making of the tree asset
For my tree's it was quite simple yet complicated. First I went onto Blenders user preference and then went on add-ons and then i just typed sap in the search part on the left hand side and ticked the box and then exited out of it.
Next I just went on the curve option and then chose the add tree option on the bottom, once the tree has been added it isn't a complete tree yet so before clicking of or moving the tree I went on the left hand side which showed options as to what you can do to the tree so first I bevelized it by clicking the bevel option on the side and then I just played around with the settings which included a few options that will help you manipulate and control how many leaves you want, the shape of your leaves and you can also changed how many branches your tree has and how long and thick they will be.
Once I had finished the tree I exported it out as an FDX so that I'll be able to put it into unity and lastly I didn't know how to add a texture to it in blender so I just did it in unity in the same way you would put a texture on your objects.

The making of the Statues
For my statues I tried to make it look as human like as possible but then I thought that would take too much time so I just used primitive shapes instead to make a sort of 3D model of a "stick man".

Finished Cutscene.
For the last section of the script I used an alternative dialogue instead of the original one.

Alternative voice overs for section #8 of the script.

Task 5 – Interactive Story and Writing strategies

Cinematics (Trailer)
A cinmatic trailer is a short preview for a film but for games it's a little different but they're basically like adverts for both for games however cinematic trailers usually shows some characters sometimes all of them, cineatic trailers usually overexaggerate how the game is actually supposed to be but this is what captures their audiences attention, cinematics don't really always show the how the game should actually be played like in one of the few Leage of Legends cinematics there was one the was supposed to serve as a preview for a new game mode but once game mode was release it was nothing like how they showed it in the cinematic.
They also have others that don't necessarily link to the actual gameplay of the game but it just showcases some characters interacting with each other differently for when they're actually in the game, but sometimes the unusual character interactions interest the players because most of the interactions are unpredictable which makes it more interesting. But not all cinematics that they publish are trailers for the game.

Cut scene

Cut scenes are usually like little cinematics in the game where it shows an event thats linked to what the player character is currently doing, cutscenes usually appear between gameplay once you've finished a quest or something. Story driven games like The Last of Us and The Walking Dead are full of these cutscenes having unique cutscenes for each of the path that you choose.

In games sometimes cut scenes can't be skipped but there are some that you can and are unavoidable because they're important and are necessary for story driven games. It helps push the games story a lot because cutscenes usually show things that you wouldn't really within the gameplay. Most story driven games usually start with a cinematic that then leads to the starting point of the game.

Triggered Event
As the name suggests this allows the player to interact with the player characters surroundings or environment , it's also known as a scripted sequence these are usually used to play short cut scenes which the player has very little control of when they start. They are quite commonly used in games like Half-Life and Call of Duty to give players new challenges and bring in new enemies which gives some players a little surprise because they usually just pop up while the player is in the middle of playing. They are to apparently to help with increasing immersion and also maintains a smooth flowing experience which keeps the players interested.

Player Control (How player control has helped story telling)
Player control allows the player to be the one who directs where the story goes. games like The last of Us and The Walking Dead, the way the game goes is completely all up to the player as their dicisions determine where and how the story will end. The game will give you options like actions or what to say and from that the story will flow according to the options you pick which is why The last of Us and The Walking Dead are perfect examples for this. I think that this is great because it allows the player to explore different sides of the story which keeps the players interested and wanting more. There are also games like Infamous where your actions determine whether you are good or bad it also deteremines what kind of abilities you can use because good and bad have different set of abilities you can use.

Character Customisation
A perfect example for this would be sims because in sims it doesn't just allow you to customize how your character looks from the hair to their eyes, their height and their age the game also allows you to customize your characters personality and their qualities which there are a few that you can choose from. The way the game plays is quite realistic meaning that whatever kind of personality and qualities you chose for your character will be implemented to hos they interact with other sims and how they'll their lives which I think is great because even though the sims have their own little story you still have the power to control how things go in their lives which I think is what attracts people into the game, apart from the fact that you can also customize the house in which your sims will live in which also actually plays quite a big roll in their story.

Task 4 – Emotion.

Happiness
Happiness is one of the most commonly used emotion in games because it's a pleasant feeling that everyone wants to feel, so this emotion has a very high appeal on people. The way that characters in games get their happiness is through many things but one of the main ones is through victory. One of the main characters that strike me as happy is Mario from the more recent super mario where you can properly see what kind of emotion their face is conveying, in marios case the way he helps the storyline of saving princess peach while defeating bowsers minions is that he goes through all of it with a smile on his face, but that doesn't mean that he doesn't get angry or puts an angry face on but him smiling helps because it makes levels less tense and it's also kind of a stereotype for the hero/heroine to be a happy and jolly character and if you search Mario up you will see that in the majority of the images he has a big smile on his face. but this makes playing more fun for the players.

Vengeance
Vengance is basically just revenge which is when someone desires to inflict pain on someone who has done them wrong in some type way to push them to think the way they are currently thinking. A good example for this is one of the main characters a game called tekken and that character is Kazuya, I think that he is a good example because his backstory is that once, his father Heihachi threw him off a cliff and left him there to see weather he is worthy to inherit the company then some years later he enters a fighting competition made by his father and he enters it just so that he could get revenge for what his father did to him in the past.

Fear
Fear is used in game as much happiness is but the games that
specifically use this emotion through out the whole story are of course horror games. The story of horror games revolves around fear, in horror games it's not just the main character that feels fear it also passes the effect on the player playing the game. A good example for this is Miles Upshur who is a freelance journalist that decides to investigate a psychiatric hotpital that is situated deep in the mountains of Lake County, Colorado. The player plays the game in a first-person narrative style and its set in a psychiatric hospital that is overrun by homicidal patients. In the game there is a lot of running away and hiding from the homicidal patients and navigating through the corridors and vents to get away from the patients, but the fact that the game is played through a first-person narrative style is a great way to make the player be fearfully involved with the game because it makes them feel like they're actually the ones being chased which of course creates fear and tension but it also allows the player to sort of sympathize with the character because the first-person narrative style allow the player to see and hear exactly what the character see's and hears including heavy breathing which also creates a kind of atmosphere.

Anger
This is an emotion that is felt by everyone and besically one of the centers for negativity be it in game or real life, it doesn't matter whether it's the protagonist or the antagonist this can also trigger the start of a violent and aggressive story. A lot of other emotions can trigger anger like envy but anger can also trigger other emotions like revenge or vengeance. A good example for this is Asura from Asura's Wrath who was once a respected guardian but his anger started when he was betrayed by his own subordinates loosing his family and getting banished for twelve thousand years right after and it's pretty understandable that he is angry but he takes his vengeance to a different level by channeling his rage and destroying the worlds deity's.

Perseverance
This is when no matter how many times you fall you have the strength to once again stand up and carry on with no matter how many time it happens. A good example for this could once again be Kazuya because of the fact that he was once thrown into a cliff by his father but he managed to live and become strong to get revenge on his father.

Heroism
Heroism is when someone shows great bravery. A good example for this is Lara Croft from the Tomb Raider series because of the way she searches and explore dangerous places she is showing great bravery as any normal person wouldn't be able to do the things that she does. In many cases she fights vicious animals, hidden tribes and the bad people who are also searching and exploring the sites. A game with Lara Croft in it isn't complete unless there are traps which is also another way she shows great bravery by being able to manage to get through the traps.

Valour
Valour is when someone shows great bravery in the face of danger. Basically all the game protagonist has this heroic quality because it pushes the story further but also attracts audiences into the game. A good example for this  would be once again Lara Croft form Tomb Raider because of how she handles herself when facing against her enemies. Another good example for this would be Ellie from the last of us because of the fact that time after time she overcomes her fears and fight the undead again and again.

Hope
There are two way to go about this, there are the characters that give hope but there are also the characters who are always hopeful whether to be saved or for something else. A good example for this two parts are Mario and Princess Peach from the Super Mrio series. For the first part Mario is the one that gives Peach the hope but for the second part Peach is the one that is always hopeful hoping for Mario to save her from the hands of Bowser. In Games once mario does get to save Peach it also fills the players with satisfaction.

Competitiveness
This can either be felt by both parties or just that one person because not everyone is competitive and they just want to have fun but that doesn't mean that you can't be competitive and not have fun at the same time. A good example for this would be Lily Rochefort and Asuka Kazama from the Tekken, I chose these two because Lily set it for her self that Asuka is her rival and she's always trying to fight Asuka while she's minding her own business although Lily finds Asuka as her rival Asuka has never really acknowledged Lily as her rival but sill fights her anyways but even though Lily finds Asuak to be her rival the only time she really ever has fun is when she's having a brawl with Asuka.

Task 3 – Representation.

There are usually different types of stereotypes within a particular games story and it usually consists of the hero/heroine, sidekick, antagonist and the collectables.

Hero/Heroin
The heroes in video games are usually represented as bold and courageous characters with a heroic personality and heroic ambitions, but not all characters are the same, some might start off as underdogs and get pushed to have those heroic ambitions and some are trained to do it.

apart from personality female and male protagonists are usually presented very differently in terms of clothing. Females are usually dressed in tight and revealing outfits like in the Tomb Raider franchise where the heroin who is Lara Croft has always been dressed in tight or/and revealing outfits as the image shows.

Apart from clothing there is also the body image side of things and female heroins are usually designed to be overly sexualised like having really thin waist and having slender bodies. while men are usually fully covered with either armor or clothes. Most of these stereotypes are used and abused for the sole purpose of attracting all of the different types of audiences. The oversexualization of female characters in games be it the hero/heroine, a sidekick or a CPU is to attract the male gamers.

But they don't always use female characters to attract audiences, there are also male characters who supposedly have the ideal body image that woman wants in a man like Kratos from the game God of War or most of the male characters from Tekken 6. Some male characters are given revealing clothes, little armor or clothes that are tight enough to outline their muscles.

Jin Kazama (Tekken)          Kratos (God of War)         Lee Chaolan (Tekken)

Sidekick
In games, sidekicks are usually quirky, ditsy and funny and are usually animals, they are the ones in the story line that keeps the hero/heroine company from the beginning. Sidekicks are usually animals because of the fact that they are easy to get along with and many players can relate to having a sidekick or a pet and people usually get more emotionally attached to animals more than humans.
Examples of these sidekicks is rush from the mega man series, Dogmeat from Fallout series, Kazooie from Banjo-Kazooie etc.

Antagonist
Antagonists are the main Villains in the game that will always have something against the hero/heroine and will try to stop them from doing good and stand in their way. In games it is stereotypical that the antagonists are male they also have their stereotypical looks of being serious, mad, hideous, unusual looking, powerful and intimidating. An example of an unusual and intimidating looking antagonist is ares from God of War Ascension, another example is Ludwig The Holy Blade from Bloodborne who is a boss and has a chillingly revolting look but like I said before they are usually male characters.

Collectable
Collectable characters in games are usually shown to always give off a charming mood and are quite welcoming, these collectables are usually fictional creatures whether they're human like or animal like but what they all have in common is that the main goal is train them and build a bond or a brotherhood between the player character and the collectable character. A good example for these types of games is Pokemon because most Pokemon games specifically the ones on the Nintendo DS allows you to fight, capture with a pokeball and train your own creature or monster but as you train them you build a strong bond between each other, the Pokemon series was adapted from the animated version and the animated series shows a lot of the brotherhood and bonding that I was talking about.
The collectable characters have their own unique character design but can also evolve to have improved abilities and strength but will also have an improved character design.

Task 2 – Storytelling within Genre’s

First Person Shooter (FPS)
First Person Shooter games usually tells it's story from a first person perspective this means that the players see the action through the eyes of the player character, this allows the player to feel like they were the character themselves, although you can't see what the character your playing looks like it still makes you feel involved or maybe much more involved than games that tell the story from a third persons perspective which I think is one of the reasons why FPS games are popular because of the fact that they can make the player feel involved with the player character be it mental or emotional involvement.

It makes you feel much more emotionally involved than others because say if a sad or happy scene was happening it allows for the player to get a closer much more personal view of the other characters face which allows you to see a more detailed look of their facial expressions. An example of a classic first person shooter game is counter strike, it allowed the player to choose whether they wanted to join the terrorist team, the counter terrorist team or just be a spectator, each team would attempt to complete their mission objective and/or eliminate the enemy team.

The objectives changed depending on what map you are in and one of the most popular one is the bomb defusal where the terrorists must plant a bomb on one of the designated spots and protect it from being disarmed or defused by the counter-terrorists before it explodes to win. Planting the bomb has it's animation and because it's in first person perspective it allows the player to feel and visualize the moment.

A perfect example would be the Far Cry series, right now every one is playing the latest in he series which is Far Cry Primal which was released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on February 23, 2016 and I think that one of the main reasons why people play it is because of the fact that you can actually tame animals to use them in combat so kind of like a sidekick which brings in a whole new experience of playing in first person perspective but it also allows the player to imagine and experience what it was like to live in the stone age which is what era the game was set in, the traditional guns and vehicles were removed which means that players can't purchase weapons so they have to craft spears, bows and arrows and other things used for living at that time and the vehicles are replaced by large predators like a prehistoric bear or a saber tooth tiger which the player must tame to be able to mount them.

Also sidekicks or/and pets compensate for the fact that you can't see what your character looks and personally to be able to control animals to fight along side you plus their design sounds very appealing along with the fact that you can also roam or scout using an animal you've tamed which then changes your camera to a close third person perspective as the video below shows an owl soaring through the forest which I think is another fun experience.

Third Person Shooter (TPS)
The way third person shooter games tell their story usually gives the feeling that the story or the game is being narrate through the camera so unlike first person shooter games the player camera is not directly connected to the player character as if they were the ones carrying the story through. Unlike in first person view where you only see what the player character sees in third person you get to see more of what's happening and the environment that your character is in although it's not up and personal when it comes to action or fighting like in first person perspective, third person shooter makes up for it by showing what your character looks like as you do the moves that if it was in first person perspective you would probably only see a foot or a hand moving.

I personally prefer third person perspective games because I get a satisfied feeling when I can see what the character I'm playing looks like because I like seeing the character design how they move and you get a wider view of their surroundings which then allows you to get a better view of the setting or the scenery. A good example of a popular third person shooter game is the Grand Theft Auto series but I will be specifically talking about Grand Theft Auto V which came out in the year 2013. Grand Theft Auto was set in around about 2013 in the city of Los Santos and it's other surrounding areas which tells the story of the three protagonists named Michael De Santa, Franklin Clinton and Trevor Phillips. The story follows after the events of Grand Theft Auto IV and then four years after the events of Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars.

Los Santos is a fictional city that was based of Los Angeles aka the City of Angels in California. The player get's to play all three of the protagonists and follow each of their story but are still connected to each other. Because of third person perspective you get to understand more of what's happening in the character's surroundings but also see some things that your character might not because the camera is usually placed above and behind the character you're playing.

A good example of a popular third person shooter game is the Skyrim series but within the game the player has the option to whether play in third person or first person perspective but Skyrim isn't the only where the player has the option to whether play in first or third person perspective, another example is the popular game Minecraft. The video below shows the player changing from third to first person view.

Links:
http://gta.wikia.com/wiki/Grand_Theft_Auto_V

Roleplaying Game (RPG)
Roleplaying Games usually tell their story through the cut scenes shown throughout the whole game and also through environmental triggers as if it was story being told from a book and by environmental trigger what it means is that for example if the player character were interact with an object that is a significant part of the story it would then go straight to the cut scene or just destroy something and a good example for an environmental trigger is Battlefield 4 Levolution which in the video below shows you how the player demolishes the shanghai skyscraper.

The works on these types of storytelling are very expansive and the story has a lot of side areas to it and  are usually told indirectly. Another good example for this is Skyrim: elder scrolls V because whenever there is a mission the camera always zooms in on the player character and the character giving the mission an then everything becomes like a mini cut scene and most of these connect with each other. There are also instances where if the character successfully parries the enemy's attack the camera will change into a cinematic angle and it would follow the character as he fatally attacks the enemy.

Fighting
Characters in fighting games usually have their own unique background story and to make their stories more interesting they link it with other characters that are also in the game but in every fighting there will always be the main character in which the main story revolves around and a good example for this is the Tekken franchise. The plot of the game is that there is a powerful man named Heihachi Mishima who is the owner of a big company who then announces a fighting tournament in which the winner will be rewarded with $1 billion cash prize.

One of the characters partaking in the tournament is his son Kazuya Mishima who entered the competition solely for taking revenge on his father because of what he did to him in the past where he was once taken to the top of the mountain and then mercilessly thrown off a cliff by his own father to test his strength and ability and whether he climbs back up or not will determine whether he get to inherit their company one day but Kazuya manages to reach it at the top of the tournament and stays there for many years and then one day his father challenges him to a battle on top of the same cliff he was thrown in because Heihachi was furious and angry by his sons winnings but at the end Kazuya defeats Heihachi into an unconscious state which he then takes his body and throws him off the cliff.

Sport
In my opinion sports doesn't really have a specific story line like the others but they have just about as much objectives as the others which in common sense is basically to win and rise to the top. Most games the are in the sport genre usually have their camera angle at a very high third person perspective so in games like Fifa you would be able to see the field in a much wider view and be able to see every player, but it's not far enough to be a bird's eye view. Games like Fifa allows the player to feel like their favorite football player because the characters are based on real life people and like I said before games in the sports is all about being able to play your favorite character and being able to rise to the top of the your opponents.

There are also other sports games where it requires you to be physically involved with it like Wii sports. In Wii sports they have various activities which all include hand movement  like Ping-Pong, sword fighting and archer. Wii sports games can either be played solo or you can compete with friends.

Strategy
Strategy games have many different ways in which they tell their story but one thing is for sure. it's the fact they push and stimulate your brain by making you think of ways you can do stuff within the game. In a game like Bloons TD5 you have to stop the balloons from passing through to the exit by putting down towers or in this case monkeys and machines in which each of them have different abilities and functions but the same goes for the balloons too because as the level or wave of balloons progresses they take more hits before they pop and there some heavy ones where some of the towers aren't allowed to hit so you have to upgrade them and with each upgrade they grow stronger and earn more functions abilities which allows some of the towers to hit boss balloons which other towers aren't able to.

Simulation
Simulation games are the type of games that allow you to create your own story through many different ways like the popular Facebook game Farmville. Farmville is a game that allows you to run and design your own farm by adding in animals and crops for resource that you get money from, the game also allows you to decorate your farm using trees and other things that you would see in a farm. Apart from Farmville there many other simulation games in Facebook like Dragonvale for example.

Dragonvale allows you to build your own dragon village and you can build food farms that you get food from to feed your dragons making them grow and evolve and become stronger and when they're strong enough you can get them to fight other dragons owned by other people playing the game in Facebook, it also allows you to breed dragons together to create new ones. Each dragons have their own element or attribute and they have to be put in the right habitat that is the same as their attribute.

A really popular simulation game is none other than the sims franchise, the game sims in general is a game that allows you create your own character which you can basically customize in every aspect like their personality, their personal qualities, their face, their hair, their body  and many more.
